Kontiki Adventure 2009

“ One of the most anticipated events of the year has come and gone once again. The Kontiki Adventure. The competition where each troop is required to design and build a raft, then stay on it over night doing certain tasks such as cooking supper or building a model. This year’s theme was Atlantis. “

The raft crew finished school on Friday the 27th March and headed eagerly the Sea Scout Base to begin the construction of the raft. The equipment had been brought down to the base the week before by parents and was ready to take the form of our raft. The raft design was laid out and the lashings began. The rest of the troop joined them at 7pm and instantly began helping out. The generator was cranked on, lights shining bright, as the night descended upon us. The senior scouts and Scouters helped tie the remaining lashings while the younger ones held the barrels up and tie down the floor boards.

The next day was full of excitement as the rafts where launched and the Atlantis costumes came out. The rafts where launched into Sandvlei by speedboat, ready for a night of fun and crafts. Back on the land a fringe team consisting of our youngest scouts took part in competitions such as tug of war, races and many more. The Supper was an interesting sea food dish but we managed to cook the best supper and win the activity!

The dawn of Sunday broke upon the rafts and a lot of tired scouts (most staying up all night). The teams finished off their spare time activities before coming ashore for the final parade and award ceremony. We were placed 7th out of 21 teams. Well done to the raft team on this excellent result!
