Seagull Trophy PL Instructions - 28 July 2002

The inter Patrol competition, the Seagull Trophy, takes place on Sunday, 28th June 2002, or at least the main event (see below). You already know where you are meeting with your Patrol and where the end point is. Please make sure you start arriving at 8.30am (for 9.00am prompt start). The presentation of the Trophy will be at 3.00pm.

One test, as is the tradition of the Seagull Trophy, is that of Patrol attendance. You should ensure that every Patrol member is at the competition.

Each member in your Patrol needs to:

  • Meet in Scout Uniform (wear shoes/boots of your choice) at the start point. Do not bring your Sea Scout hat.
  • Have a day pack which includes lunch, a jersey, raincoat, hiking cap, sunscreen and 1 litre water. Potable water is available on the mountain.

In addition, your Patrol requires the following:

  • Compass
  • Small Billy OR a metal mug/cup
  • Tennis Ball
  • 3 blank sheets of A4 paper
  • 2 staves
  • 1 egg

If you have any questions you are welcome to phone or e-mail Nigel. Make sure that you look at Pre-event Task 1 and Task 2!

Good Luck

Pre-event Task 1

  1. What is the altitude of the starting point of the hike on the road?
  2. What is the highest altitude you will be reaching, at the top of the ravine?

Please phone your answers to Nigel at 713-1535 and leave your answer on the answering machine. It is in your interest to answer the question as soon as possible to maximise your score. At the start of the competition you will need to be able to justify your answers for 1 and 2 above.

Pre-event Task 2

Use any resource that you can lay your hands on, to help you answer the below two questions.

  1. Have a look at the below flowers. With a bit of luck, you will see all three of these plants flowering on the hike on Sunday. Make sure that you can identify each flowerhead and that your Patrol can too. You needn't tell the organisers now what they are (unless you are really chuffed with your id and can't wait), you can keep that for Sunday.  The Protea Atlas website may help you with your answer. Do a Google or Alta Vista search to find this site or ask somebody what the URL is.
  2. "We are indeed incredibly fortunate to be living in the world's smallest floral kingdom, but yet with the greatest species diversity". Make sure that you and your Patrol understands the previous statement.
