Troop Highlights 2004

Vlakkenberg Troop Hike

This was our visit to Vlakkenberg on a cold, windy and rainy Sunday. Not to be deterred - we got to the highest peak.

Beaver Rose Trophy

This competition was held over the weekend of 8/9 August 2004 and was held at Glencairn.  1st Bergvliet won. Have a look at Beaver Rose Trophy 2004 photographs.

World Conservation Badge

Have a look at a photograph of 2nd Bergvliet Scouts who were doing the World Conservation Badge. A number of Scouts went to Franschhoek to knock over alien Hakea sericea plants where were threatening the charismatic Blushing Bride. Approximately 1500 alien plants were hacked.

Troop Hike

Have a look at the Troop Hike photograph.  The hike was a stroll for junior Scouts starting at Constantia Nek at 4.00pm and returning at 8.00pm.  We discovered how cold it can be on top of Table Mountain!  We got as far as the Woodhead Dam.

Troop Highlights 2003

Troop Camp

The annual Troop Camp was held at Stanford in December, 2003. Have a look at the second Troop Camp 2003.

Seamanship Competition

The Seamanship Competition was unfortunately not run in 2003 and 2nd Bergvliet therefore retain the trophies from the victory of 2002.

Beaver Rose Trophy

This competition was held over the weekend of 9/10 August 2003 and was held at Glencairn.  1st Bergvliet won and in thus doing broke 2nd Bergvliet's run of wins. Have a look at Beaver Rose Trophy 2003 photographs.

Seagull Trophy

The competition was held on 6th June 2003 and was won by Penguin Patrol with Kenneth Crombie as PL. Have a look at  Patrol Leader's Instructions for Seagull Trophy - 6th June 2003. The competition comprised 3 bases and Patrols were driven to the bases by parents who were asked to provide transport. The 3 bases were twist making, computer racing car driving and digital photography (the pictures were then copied to this site under Patrol Corners). Congratulations to Penguin Patrol on winning the competition. This was the 30th anniversary of the Seagull Trophy and was accordingly presented by 'Seagull' Burnett who donated the Trophy in 1973 and who started off the competition all those years ago.

Gordon Shield

In 2003 we entered 1 Patrol although normally we have at least two Patrols. The team came 19th which is perhaps not one of the best results the Troop has ever had but the _self thing is that the Scouts got experience and "we were there".  Well done to Warren Kane on being the Patrol Leader and battling along with only 7 members in his Patrol. Have a look at more about the Gordon Shield for some of the years gone by.

Kontiki Adventure

Whew! We bombed out at this years Kontiki. Apparently the hut which has been unsatisfactory for a number of years has now been dismantled entirely and a new one will be made for Kontiki 2004!

Rayner Trophy

2nd Bergvliet won the Rayner for the first time in 2003. Have a look at Rayner Trophy 2003.

Upton Shield

2nd Bergvliet won the competition in 2003. Have a look at Upton Shield 2003.

Troop Camp

Troop Highlights 2002

Seamanship Competition

This competition was held over the weekend of 13/14/15 September 2002 and was held at Simonstown. The sailing weather was not very favourable at all, and most races on the water were pulling races.

Trophies won were the Seamanship Trophy, Seamanship Skills and Pulling. We were placed 2nd in the Navigation competition.Congratulations to Peter Meyer (PL) and his Patrol.

Beaver Rose Trophy

This competition was held over the weekend of 10/11 August 2002 and was held at Glencairn which was retained by 2nd Bergvliet. Kestrel Patrol (PL Peter Meyer) won the competition. Have a look at Beaver Rose Trophy 2002 photographs.

Sea Scout Regatta

2nd Bergvliet was placed second overall in this competition for the coveted binnacle. We won the Junior Pulling race.

Seagull Trophy

This competition was held on 28 July 2002 in appalling weather with high winds and intermittent showers. Have a look at the instructions to the Patrol Leaders.

It took the form of a day hike from the East Fort on the Chapmans Peak Road to the view point at the entrance to the Silvermine Nature Reserve. There were 15 bases along the way which covered Scouting skills and fun bases. Congratulations to Swift Patrol (PL Devin Jones) who won the competition followed closely by Kestrel (PL Peter Meyer) and Albatros Patrol (PL Robert Schmid) who tied in second position.

Troop Highlights 2001

Troop Camp

The annual Troop Camp was held near Stanford in December, 2001. Have a look at Troop Camp 2001.

Beaver Rose Competition

In August, 2001 the competition was tied between Kingfisher Patrol (PL Stefano Rivera) and Penguin Patrol (PL Kenneth Crombie). There was no second place as a result of the first place tie. Seagull Patrol (PL Nicholas Abbott) came third. Have a look at more about the Beaver Rose Competition.

Mission Impossible 2

Mission Impossible 2 was the theme of the Troop Programme on 8 June 2001. It involved each Patrol visiting a number of novel bases, some of which are not seen very often in our Troop Programme. The '2' in Mission Impossible 2 alludes to the second time Ian Nixon (helped by David Glass) ran this Troop Programme concept.

Have a look at the Mission Impossible 2 thumbnails and if you like one, click on it for a blown up version of the photograph.

Gordon Shield

The 2nd Bergvliet A Patrol retained the Gordon Shield competition in 2001.

Troop Highlights 1997

Rayner Trophy

The Troop entered two teams in the Rayner Trophy Competition. This is an event for Senior Scouts and it was held above Simonstown and in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.

Kontiki Raft Building

The theme of this year's Kontiki Raft building competition was 'Escape from Paradise'. Kontiki Raft Building has become a very popular event held at the Sea Scout Base, Sandvlei.

A feature of this year's raft was the acquisition of six 7m poles. This enabled a very large raft to be constructed.

Troop Highlights 1996

Troop Camp

The Troop highlight of the year was undoubtly the Troop Camp. It was held at the Hawequas Scout Ranch which is about 50km east of Cape Town at the foot of the beautiful Du Toits Kloof Mountains. The site is near Wellington and Paarl.

We succeeded in going to Hawequas on the very day when a major cold front hit Cape Town. It poured with rain and there was a major snowfall on the mountains. Fortunately the rain let up sufficiently for us to get the tents up without getting either our kit or ourselves too wet. As we are Sea Scouts we don't mind getting a little wet, but not too wet!

Some of the activities were:

  • A circular hike in the mountains above Hawequas.
  • Chicken potjies (Chicken cooked in a black pot on coals).
  • Floating a burning jam tin across the dam.
  • An Orienteering exercise.
  • Swimming at the slides in freezing water (snow on the mountains).
  • Apple pie baking in Dutch Ovens.
  • Games - Volleyball, Frisbee, Cricket.
  • The inevitable Wide Game.
  • A commando course.
  • Campfire.

Inter Patrol Sailing Competition

This activity is held once a year in the Troop at the Sea Scout Base, Sandvlei. We are of course Sea Scouts and therefore sailing plays an important part in the Troop Programme.

Beaver Rose Trophy

This is a District Competition where each Patrol Leader takes his Patrol on camp. A standing camp is set up and there are many activities to keep the Scouts interested such as STA's (Spare Time Activities), campfire skits, cooking, pioneering, etc.

The Troop has a proud history of winning this competition more times than any other Troop in the District. In fact, we have won it for the last 9 years.

Here is the winning 1996 Swift Patrol

Swift Patrol
Back: Ryan Cox, David Glass (PL), Andrew Avis, Nicholas Gates, Kyle Nash
Front: Patrick Burls, Devin Jones, Peter Meyer
