Kalk Bay Caves Visit - 17 March 2002

Our caving experience started off on Friday, 15 March when the Cape Peninsula Spelaeology Society visited a Troop meeting. We were shown slides of the Kalk Bay Caves and Cango 3. A demonstration of how a carbide lamp operates along with a rope ladder was then given.

On the following Sunday, the spelaeologists took us into the Kalk Bay Mountains where we went caving. Thanks go to Anthony Hitchcock, Peter Swart and Stefan Moser for taking us and giving up their time.

The hike comprised the following activities:

  • Instruction and handing out of hard hats, torches and ladders.
  • Route Planning, Safety and Caves Exploration.
  • Clovelly Cave
  • Werewolf Cave
  • Oriad Halls descent via rope ladder, the traditional entrance.
Its dark in there without my torch!
