Mark Ferry's Article on Kontiki 1996

Kontiki this year was based on the theme "Kontiki goes to Hollywood” for which each team had to choose a movie on which to base most of their STA’s as well as the costume competition.

After the construction had been completed and the raft launched, the Kontiki Team of Savvas Bizinos, Sean Nagle, David Glass, Ryan Cox, Warren Berry and myself boarded the raft and got to work on the first few STA’s. We were towed around to the bay and anchored there, along with about 30 other rafts.

Among the STA’s we had to do, before we were marked on our dinner, were sculpting an effigy of the Oscar Award out of clay, recreating, in a shoebox, a scene from our chosen move - Natural Born Killers, as well as making a bi-colour plaster cast of a hand.

For dinner we had a chicken stir-fry served with an olive and feta cheese hors d’Oeuvre and then settled down into our watch routines in 2 hour shifts, which we had to keep up the whole night through.

The next morning we had very little to do besides enter the tender race, raft race and complete the last STA for which it was necessary to visit each raft to find out which movie they had chosen.

We finally got towed back to dry land and dismantled the raft (not without some amount of difficulty, for some of the knots had become quite tight).

Although we only came 12th out of 34 teams, we improved in the construction of the frame and deck, which of course was due to our new plywood floorboards, but fell down badly because of the hut. (This will need to be reconstructed before next year’s competition.

Kontiki ‘96 was an enjoyable experience for all on the raft and we look forward to next year’s competition.
